Have you ever wondered what it would be like to exist in a state of super-human-happiness? Euphoria emanating from every pore? Levitating perhaps even? Well, just ask Stuart D. Bogie – especially while he is making music- he is barely able to keep the crowd wide grin off of his face…
This was the scene last week at the Mercury Lounge, when Stuart brought his pet project – Superhuman Happiness – in a lively Phish after-party show. And the vibe was contagious. As the crew hit the stage an almost immediate dance frenzy was created in the intimate crowd. Ravishing in the excitement, they promptly served us a sonic world-wind of adventures and jamliciousness.
The style was superhuman-funky with a shake of jazzy and weird, often changing tempo and mood. Each member switched up instruments, from xylophone to maracas to sax, and sharing turns on who lead each song. It’s apparent that they make it a team effort, and possibly make some of it up as they go.
It’s also apparent that they are not your typical ‘we play, you listen’ type band; but rather an interactive group feeding off the crowd energy. A show highlight was when Stuart instructed us to sing back 4 different vocal parts of the song. This was seemingly complicated at first, but everyone was amped to be involved, and when it finally worked out it was the type of thing that gives you concert shivers.
By the end of the show it was difficult to leave without a feeling of elation. That’s what happens around Superhuman Happiness… it’s the type of thing that rubs off on you.
