Pickwick

My first experience of Pickwick was seeing them featured on Something in the Water, a PBS series about emerging Seattle artists. Including clips of their live performance at KEXP’s studios, they played fan  favorite Window Sill, after which the DJ exclaimed, “Wow, it’s like a revival in here!”

Well, I can’t think of a better way to describe Pickwick-live then that. I knew I liked them before, and after seeing their recent show at the Rickshaw, now I am completely a believer. Their sound is energetic, soulful and passionate; with shades of grass roots and shades of church sermon. Disston guided us with his bluesy vocals and an intense spirit; while the others filled the stage with the force of a gospel choir, hailing the heavens. Pickwick’s drummer Emmett especially stood out all the way from the back with his fly-trapping grin.

Disston entertained the crowd between songs also, engaging us with a refreshing presence that’s all too rare in today’s shoe-gazer world. He told us funny anecdotes about other bands playing Free Bird at festivals. He also mentioned it was their first visit to Canada, which may have contributed to the all too modest crowd. Or perhaps they are still making their mark. Anyway, the crowd sparsity was barely noticeable; overshadowed by their high energy and spiritual persuasiveness. And for a band that started out in the basements of Puget Sound, I’m not too sure where they get it all from. But I like it.

If Pickwick returns any time soon, I strongly encourage you to turn up and experience the Revival. Time to be saved!
