Foster the People

For a band that gets *every 10th song* airplay, it’s no surprise that the whole of Deer Lake field was packed out with shrieky young girls to hear Foster the People last week. What was surprising was the sheer force with which they ripped on to the stage, rearing to party. Foster lead the excitement, shimmying from end to end of the stage with his guitar and never missing a beat. Him and Fink swapped out instruments like they were at a Tom Lee garage sale; bass to keyboard to keyboard to drum and only gaining momentum with every switch. And the rest of the crew played and jumped around wildly with grins so large it looked like someone might swallow a mallet. The stage was filled with theme-parky antics, from a massive LED sunshine to inflatable tribal puppets to bubble machines; not that one thing more was needed to fill the stage but the energy of these guys.

Highlighting the show was a cameo from Kimbra, performing their collaborative track, Warrior and dancing around in a mini-version of Joseph’s Technicolour Dreamcoat. She had  stolen the show in her early opening performance also, being beautiful, spastic and larger than life despite that only handfuls of the audience seemed to be aware of who she is.

In the end, these two acts and Mayer Hawthorne in the middle completely ruined my plans to take the photos and leave early. But I suppose wrecking my night because a show is *too good* is not really something I can complain about.
