The Dirty Projectors rolled through town last week in promotion of their new album, Swing Low Magellan. Anticipation was in the air, partly to hear the latest of an ever evolving band line up, but moreover because the packed out crowd knew their live show is really where the magic happens. Well, they didn’t disappoint.
Rather, they delivered their intricate sound with a razor sharp precision that had me wondering if I was actually even watching them live. The rhythms were erratic and the harmonies thick; yet each point was hit bang-on as if they had been playing the songs for decades. The result was mesmerizing; they engulfed us with fluctuating and experimental moods that made it nearly impossible to not travel along with them. If you missed it, I’d like to say that you should check out their new album (probably you should), but you also missed something really special on stage. Well, it’s not quite the same, but thank goodness for You Tube.
