In the crowd I stand, directly below Sarah Barthel’s keyboard, in a mass of women screaming about how she is “hot stuff”… and she is.
Like a siren, she alluringly moans her soft lyrics to the microphone to a captivated audience. She throws her hair around and twists and turns along with the music. By her side, Josh Carter gives the same treatment with his fingers to the guitar and the effect is magical. The scene is dark, moody and sensual.
Some relatively new kids on the block (signed 2009), Phantogram impresses at Venue with their mature sounds, thick with intelligence and emotion. Though their stage presence is pretty slim, it is clear that they are just really involved with producing their amazing music. Overall, a show worth seeing and a band worth checking out.
